It has been 16
years since the terrorist attacks happened in the U.S.A. As a result of the
attack, about 3,000 people were killed and the Americans were in panic.
Americans realized that they could be attacked whenever and wherever even
though they were in American territory. These facts made Americans were afraid
of terrorists and feel uneasy about their life. As a consequence of the
terrorist attack that made the whole world astonished, there have been so many
changes in America, especially, in their life. People were in panic about the
terrorism because they realized that it could happen anywhere. Furthermore
people started to doubt others. If someone who had a big bag seemed to be
suspicious, they were nervous and they even filed. Including these, many
changes have happened. In this section, I will explain the changes, especially,
in their life of Americans.
Although it has
already been 16 years after September 11, American citizens, including New
Yorkers, are still nervous. If strangers come closer when they were on the
street, they take a step backward. They get a fright when they hear news about
terror that happens in other countries because they think it is possible they
may become new victims due to terror.
The most immediate and obvious changed
after the attacks of 9l11 took place in U.S. airports. Two months after
attacks, the new TSA (Transportation Security Act) implemented procedures to
stricter guidelines on passenger and luggage screening. For example, only
ticketed passengers could go through security, and an ever-changing array of
machinery and procedures were introduced to scan for weapons and destructive
items. Moreover, new procedures were introduced that removing shoes and banning
liquids as new threats were discovered after September 11. Airplanes themselves
also rearranged that it was introduced the fortified cockpit doors and
first-class cabin curtains by some airlines. Pilots can now apply to become a
federal flight deck officer with a loaded gun and act as a federal officer
aboard the plane.
In New York, people have become neurotic
about bags. In July 24 2005, a man threw a bag and shouted that there was a
bomb in the bag at Penn Station where was most citizens pass in a day. The man
was arrested and thousands of people took shelter for over 1 hour. Also a
travel agency filed English tourists who took in a bus tour of New York City
because they carried a big bag on their shoulder and seemed to be suspicious.
Therefore armed police encircled the bus, put handcuffs on the tourists and
searched them thoroughly.
In accordance with the spread of fear
among citizens, the biggest change is over-the-top inspections. When visitors
enter the main building of the City Corporation in New York City, they should
submit an identification card attached to a picture. After that a guard takes
an instant photograph and makes a permit card to attach the photograph.
Visitors should wear the permit card. A visitor said that he took a picture
because if he hadn’t done, he couldn’t enter the building but he added he felt
that he was treated like a criminal.
