The Discovery Channel hosted the "Cash Cab" series on it's channel since 2005 after being bought from Adam Steinman. The Discovery Channel is known for its series of non-fiction subject matters. The channel could be reach within 224 countries and territories through the 100.8 million homes of viewership in the United States alone. Included in their network, the Discovery Channel offer many genre of subjects from "science and technology, exploration, adventure, history and in-depth, to behind-the-scenes glimpses at the people, places and organizations that shape and share our world". (Network) Discovery's president and chief operating officer, Ruth L. Otte, among other executives are tasked with deciding what to put on the network after going through "4,000 and 5,000 hours of shows a year, and buy about 1,000 hours," (Otte) COO, Otte who joined The Discovery Channel in 1986 also concluded that about 500 vendors across the globe try to reach the network with series of interest that could be used by the channel. The "Cash Cab" was a series that The Discovery Channel felt was in their field of interest. It followed the guidelines of history and the reality of a game show testing the knowledge of people and their associates. The history of the series is included in the game shows testing of trivia questions. The amount of research needed to give the question and along with the answer to each could be enduring at first for the staffs of the network. With being a game show the questions could come from anywhere. Set in New York City, among others sites, the Discovery Channel broadcast average citizens being tested by how much they knew about their general knowledge and trivia questions. The series entertains the viewers of the channel through interesting questions in the format of the game show.
