CONSEQUENCES OF NOISE ON OUR HEALTH

Noise is such a constant factor in our lives, especially in the city like New York, that we don’t notice it anymore because we have become so accustomed to it and somewhat immune but not without adverse effects on our mental as well as physical health.

1-Impacts of noise on our mental health.

Noise and its lingering affects our ability to learn by decreasing our capacity to memorize and think. It decreases the productivity at work and inhibits multitasking because it decreases our mental energy. It disturbs our sleep and precludes our peace of mind. For example, a person who sleeps in the presence of noise will still feel tired when he woke up. According to psychologist Howard M. Bogard, who served on the Major of New York City’s noise Control, “the harmful noises are those that invade your dreams, because dreaming is necessary for mental health.”; he explained that “most people have four to six dreams a night. But if he is interrupted again and again, he will become emotionally upset. And it does not take long; a few nights are enough”. Also, he thinks that even though the noise does not awaken the sleeper who is dreaming, it will enter and change the dream into nightmare. So, noise can change our behavior by making us ferious

2-Impacts of noise on our physical health.

New York City has one of the highest rate of persons affected by high blood pressure, one of the main cause is the unwanted sound that animates the city. Those sound can be considered as murder because it can lead to the death of a person by high blood pressure. Then,” human hearing is so brutally assaulted by the technological noise that he has lost the sensitivity other creatures possess” (Kavaler, Lucy. Noise: the new menace, 1975, pp 02). Noise is destroying our ability to hear soft and insignificant sound. It has also a negative effect on our nerves and make as deaf by the time.
