In the article, “For
DACA Recipients, Losing Protection and Work Permits Is Just the Start”, the
author, Caitlin Dickerson, shines light on the domino effect that would occur because of the loss of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.
On September 5, 2017, President Trump’s administration announced the shutdown
of the program that provided approximately 800,000 individuals with living
protection and work permits (Dickerson). Although those are DACA’s two main
purposes, for many, the end of this program with no replacement offered, is
just the beginning of many troubling times to come. This action will cause individuals to lose their jobs, the ability to provide for their families, life or health
coverage and benefits provided through an employer, drivers licenses and the ability for many to
continue their studies. In some states, students will not be able to receive
any federal aid or financial support, nor obtain any professional licenses, such those needed in nursing. And if that weren't enough, deportation jumps into the picture.
